FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #11: "I Hate A Mystery Part 1" The new Mysterio, Frances Klum, is ready to avenge his brother against Spider-Man. After his arrival at school takes the form of a madhouse, with the press clamoring for his attention, Peter and Flash get into it over a violent game of dodgeball that Flash is leading with his students. Peter winds up kicking the ball into Flash's face, who has to be treated by the attractive new school nurse, Miss Arrow. Pressure from his unmasking forces Peter to resign as school teacher. Mysterio makes his move, taking over the school with his spooky, haunting tricks. Spidey tries to lead the kids to safety, but is undone by some of Mysterio's fantastic projections. Klum has his own problems, though, as he is confronted by none other than...Mysterio!
FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #12: "I Hate A Mystery Part 2" Another Mysterio, Daniel Berkhart, arrives at Midtown and wades through the smoke to beat back the Mysterio who has usurped his mantle. Meanwhile, Klum and Beck confront each other while Spider-Man and the school principal try to find the kids that have been lost in the "haunted house" that Mysterio has unleashed upon them. Flash and Miss Arrow and the kids they are trying to lead to safety are confounded by the many tricks of Mysterio. Quentin Beck approaches Miss Arrow, who he seems to know, and takes his helmet off, showing a very unsightly mess of a face!
FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #13: "I Hate A Mystery Part 3" Flash manages to help his kids escape from the high school. Spider-Man presides over the fight between Klum and Berkhart, then steps in to beat on Berkhart himself! Klum winds up giving Spider-Man a run for his money, but Flash arrives and helps Spider-Man, whereupon Klum threatens to set off a bomb. Quentin Beck urges Miss Arrow to "keep playing her part" and suggests she should try to keep Peter at the school teaching. Spider-Man and Flash diffuse the bomb, but Klum teleports away and tries to kidnap Miss Arrow. She fights him off with spikes that pop out of her wrists, but inevitably, Klum escapes for good. Afterwards, romance heats up between Flash and Miss Arrow.
FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #14: "Taking Wing Part 1" Deb Whitman's memoirs are being turned by her publisher into a largely anti-Peter Parker tabloid screed. Wolverine and Punisher show up to protect Midtown High School from assailants who wish to inflict harm upon Spider-Man; in actuality, it's Spider-Man using an image manipulator, responding to Nurse Arrow's persuasion that now that everyone connects Spider-Man to Midtown High, Peter ought to do something to protect the school. Adrian Toomes signs on as a "cape killer" to track down Spider-Man and is given his Vulture wings. Beast can't give Spider-Man refuge, but he does give him an image projector, which he uses to great effect (see Punisher/Wolverine). Peter also poses as Ben Reilly and takes a job at Midtown High as PE teacher. News of Deb's tell-all hits the media, leaving Peter feeling betrayed, and giving the Vulture a chance to formulate a plan to get at Spider-Man....
FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #15: "Taking Wing Part 2" In a flashback, Adrian Toomes is seen as a young man, being pushed hard by his quadraplegic older brother to do a mercy killing on him. When Adrian refuses, he's bullied by his brother as a weakling. In the current time, the Vulture stakes out Deb's book signing, waiting for Spider-Man. Betty Brant confronts Deb about betraying Peter. Flash shows up at the signing, too, and reunites with Betty. Meanwhile, Peter is hanging out disguised as Ben Reilly. The Vulture crashes the signing and threatens Deb, which inevitably draws Spidey out. The fight between them takes to the streets, when Vulture slashes Spider-Man with a hallucinogen, causing him to fall towards the streets below, but suddenly, the Vulture starts falling, too!
FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #16: "Taking Wing Part 3" Spider-Man snaps out of his descent and stops himself from falling. He rebounds to grab the limp body of the Vulture and carry him away. Betty flirts with Flash, Nurse Arrow shows up at the scene, marking her territory with Flash. Deb stomps off. Adrian Toomes is admitted to the hospital, where he is diagnosed as having had a stroke. He begs the doctor to kill him, just like his brother had requested of him. Deb shows up at Betty's house and confesses that she sold out Peter for money. Betty offers her the chance to help clear things up for Peter. Spider-Man shows up at Toomes bedside, who calls on his longtime foe to kill him, and when Spidey refuses, hurls insults at him. Spidey takes his mask off and begins to suffocate him with a pillow, then stops and reminds the Vulture that he had just been fighting for his life. He escapes before SHIELD agent Jamie Madrox can reach the room. News hits the Bugle front pages about Deb Whitman recanting the hit job of her biography. -- synopsis by Gormuu
