Synopsis: Mephisto sets his sights back on the Surfer. He goes to Earth and summons the Surfer to a cemetery and tells him he will tear down the barrier that confines him to Earth. Not trusting him, the Surfer regardless pierces the barrier and flies to Zenn-La, where he is told that Shall Bal was kidnapped by Mephisto and taken back to Earth. The Surfer returns and faces Mephisto, who tells him it was all a ruse, but if the Surfer will finally surrender his soul, he'll reunite them for real.

The Surfer fights back but Mephisto cackles at him to bring it on, for he will keep fighting him until his spirit is broken.

Nick Fury of SHIELD notes the cosmic battle occuring, and begins preparations to respond. Mephisto drags the Surfer to Earth and stops time, then shows him a vision of Shalla Bal lost and alone in the frozen snows somewhere on Earth. Finally, the Surfer submits to Mephisto to do his bidding. Mephisto gives him his task: destroy SHIELD!
