SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER DECEMBER 10
Posted at 9:00 PM by gormuu

Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, December 10.

Lotsa cool books to take a look at this week, so let's get right into it. Marvel offers up two new editions in the same week of their popular series of Marvel Premiere Edition Classics. Vol. 17 in the series is Avengers: First To Last MPE Classic HC, which collects the giant-sized, two-issue, 1995 limited series The Last Avengers Story by Peter David and Ariel Olivetti, plus all twelve 8-page backup strips from the recent Avengers Classic reprint series by Dwayne McDuffie and Michael Avon Oeming. The Last Avengers Story #1-2 is a futuristic "The End" type tale, whereas the backup strips take place during the action of the earliest days of the Avengers. (Thus the title From First To Last.)

Also, Vol. 18 in the series is Daredevil: Man Without Fear MPE Classic HC, which collects the five-issue series by Frank Miller and John Romita Jr. It was recently reprinted in the Daredevil by Frank Miller Companion Omnibus HC, which went quickly out of print, and is notable for being the last time Frank wrote a new DD story. Both MPE Classic HCs are available in their numbered library variants (which tend to sell out in a matter of months) and their regular counterparts.

Marvel also delivers Nova: Annihilation HC, an oversized affair which reprints the ultra-cool new series by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, with art by Sean Chen, Scott Hanna and some appropriately out of this world work by Paul Pelletier. It reprints Nova #1-12 and Nova Annual #1.

Just like Marvel's MPE Classic HCs came in pairs this week, so too does Dark Horse's Archives editions. Herbie Archives Vol. 2 HC comes out hot on the heels of the first Archives volume (which is already sold out!) It collects the ACG title's issues #6-14 and clocks in at 256 pages. Also, look out for The Complete Green Lama Featuring the Art of Mac Raboy Archives Vol. 2 HC, which finishes out Raboy's tenure on the vintage Golden Age character.

Mike Barr and Brian Bolland's early '80s masterpiece finally gets its due in hardcover with Camelot 3000 Deluxe Edition HC, reprinting the entire twelve-issue mini-series with lots of bonus materials. It's a 320 page hardcover in DC's new hardcover brand, which are the same size dimensions as Marvel's oversized hardcovers. Also from DC, the first six issues of Mark Waid and George Perez's Brave and the Bold series makes its premiere in softcover with Brave and the Bold: Lords of Luck TP. On the classic trade front, fans that lament the stalled Legion Archives series might enjoy Legion of Super-Heroes: The More Things Change TP, which follows up the Legion: An Eye For An Eye trade, as it reprints Legion of Super-Heroes #7-13 of the early '80s series by Paul Levitz.

Finally, on the strip front, we have Buck Rogers in the 25th Century: The Complete Newspaper Dailies Vol. 1: 1929-1931 HC. Now, that title is quite the mouthful, but since it reprints over 900 strips beginning with the first strip from January 1929, it deserves to have a long title!

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Amazing Spider-Girl Vol. 4: Brand New Day TP
Avengers: From First to Last MPE Classic HC
MPE Classic Vol. 17: Avengers – From First to Last HC
Batman: Joker's Asylum TP
Brave and the Bold: Lords of Luck TP
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century Dailies Vol. 1: 1929-1931 HC
Camelot 3000 Deluxe Edition HC

Complete Green Lama Featuring the Art of Mac Raboy Archives Vol. 2 HC
Daredevil: Man Without Fear MPE Classic HC
MPE Classic Vol. 18: Daredevil – Man Without Fear HC
Green Lantern: Secret Origin HC
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1: Legacy MPE HC
Herbie Archives Vol. 2 HC
Jack of Fables Vol. 4: Americana TP
JSA Vol. 3: Thy Kingdom Come Part 2 HC
Legion of Super-Heroes: The More Things Change TP
Nova: Annihilation HC
Painkiller Jane vs. Terminator Vol. 1 TP
Red Sonja Vol. 5: World on Fire HC

SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER DECEMBER 4
Posted at 9:00 PM by gormuu

Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Thursday, December 4. PLEASE NOTE: Books ship on Thursday this week due to last week's Thanksgiving holiday.

After stuffing ourselves with turkey, there's a heaping helping of books to stuff ourselves with shipping the following week. Marvel has a nice variety of collected editions fare to follow: First up is Astonishing X-Men Vol. 2 HC, an oversized edition that finishes off the Joss Whedon/John Cassaday epic. This one reprints AXM #13-24 and Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men #1, and gets my nod for book of the week. I'm a huge Joss Whedon fan, though, so take that into account! Also from Marvel, the second trade reprinting the entirety of Miller and Janson's tenure drawing the Man Without Fear: Daredevil by Frank Miller & Klaus Janson Vol. 2 TP collects Daredevil #173-184 and clocks in at 336 big pages! (This one's got the death of Elektra and the Punisher two-parter, so it's a pretty big deal!)

More from Marvel: Daredevil: Yellow MPE HC, the first of a series of Premiere Edition HCs that bring the Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale "color" books back into print in hardcover. (There are also black and white variant editions of each of these books. Apparently, the B&W Daredevil edition is not shipping this week.) Look for Hulk: Gray and Spider-Man: Blue in the upcoming months. Speaking of black and white, Essential Wolverine Vol. 5 TP comes our way, reprinting Wolverine #91-110, Wolverine Annual 1996 and Uncanny X-Men #332, taking us into the late '90s, which is further than any Essentials volume has yet taken us!

Finally, a Marvel classic trade enter our sector of outer space: Infinity Crusade Vol. 1 TP continues Marvel's exploration of Starlin's cosmic ouevre, reprinting Infinity Crusade #1-3, Warlock Chronicles #1-3 and Warlock and the Infinity Watch #18-19. (The second volume in this series has already been solicited for January!)

DC's key release of the week is Showcase Presents Supergirl Vol. 2 TP, taking us past the point where the Archives left off by reprinting Supergirl from Action #283-321.

And finally, IDW publishes Complete Terry & the Pirates Vol. 5 HC, the second to last volume in the series reprinting all of Milton Caniff's seminal strip. And Dark Horse continues to mine the ACG library with a "done-in-one" Archive featuring Magicman. Magicman Archives Vol. 1 HC reprints the '60s series by Richard Hughes, Pete Costanza and Kurt Schaffenberger.

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, November 26.

It's a big week for fans of Timely GA comics, as Marvel publishes Golden Age All-Winners Masterworks Vol. 3 HC, a 304-page whopper that will is the penultimate volume in the line. Inside is vintage work by Don Rico, Mike Sekowsky, Carl Pfeufer, George Klein and more starring Captain America, Sub-Mariner, Human Torch and the heavy hitters of Marvel's Golden Age taking on the Nazi and Japanese menace of World War II!

Speaking of war comics, DC offers up Showcase Presents Sgt. Rock Vol. 2 TP, which breezes past the point where the Archives left off, reprinting Our Army At War #118-148 by Robert Kanigher, Joe Kubert, Russ Heath and Jerry Grandenetti. And there's another book to note for old-time comics fans who wonder if any of their old favorites are still delivering the goods in today's comic world. Bat Lash: Guns and Roses TP collects the six-issue mini-series by some names you might recognize. Co-written by Peter Brandvoid and Sergio Aragones, this series was drawn by the great John Severin, still doing solid work in the 21st century. With covers by Nick Cardy and Kevin Nowlan, this old school title is worth a look from classic comic fans.

Dark Horse continues its most welcomed reprinting of classic Warren horror mags with Creepy Archives Vol. 2 HC, which reprints Creepy #6-10. It's a 288-page oversized hardcover treat for fans of the ghoulish series, with creative contributions from Archie Goodwin, Alex Toth, Gray Morrow, Reed Crandall and more.

Finally, there's a Valiant hardcover to report, one that has been digitally recolored and includes a brand new story. Archer & Armstrong: First Impressions HC reprints issues #0-6 of the early '90s series by Jim Shooter, Barry Windsor-Smith and Bob Layton. (The new story is by Shooter, Sal Velluto and Bob Almond, with cover by Michael Golden.)

Then check out THIS THREAD at the Marvel Forum for discussion about the interview and other related topics on the mind of your fellow Masterworks fans! THE ART OF IRON MAN HC: 40% OFF SITE EXCLUSIVE COUPON

Posted at 2:45 PM by gormuu

THE ART OF IRON MAN HC

Recently, Marvel published a book I'd like to take a little time to promote. The Art of Iron Man HC is a 208-page, hardcover, coffee table art book. The front cover blurb promises "an exclusive insider's look into the blockbuster Iron Man movie!" And that's pretty much what it does! Like most art books inspired by visual effects-laden feature films, it showcases the process behind the design of the film; in this case, we crack open the designs for the different armors (both Iron Man and Iron Monger), the storyboard art; the technical details like the Jarvis computer, the armor's Heads Up Display (HUD), and the Suit Up Gantry; the many different scene designs like the Stark Estate, Tony Stark's garage, the Afghan Cave, and the Arc Reactor; plus all kinds of other coverage.

The cool thing, for me at least, is that I wrote the sucker!

It was a project I took on several months ago and have been working on over time, and I'm proud enough of the final results that I'd like to make sure people know about it! The book was done with direct contributions from crew members like visual effects designer John Nelson, propmaster Russell Bobbitt, concept artists Adi Granov, Ryan Meinderding and Phil Saunders; pre-vis specialists Kent Seki and James Rothwell (from whom we have a bunch of animatics stills); production designer Michael Riva; director Jon Favreau; armor effects supervisor Shane Mahan; and storyboard artist David Lowery. The pages are full of their conceptual sketches, keyframe art, design blueprints, 3D modeling and maquettes, and still photographs from the movie. A lot of these guys have been nominated for and won Oscars in the past, and everyone is fully expecting Iron Man's achievements to be recognized in this year's Academy Awards. This book will introduce you to them and their approach to their craft.

The book also includes a brief history of Iron Man in comics, plus a special tribute to Stan Winston, the legendary Hollywood effects genius for whom Iron Man was his last project before passing away shortly after its release.

If you really fell in love with the visual effects and the gadgetry of the Iron Man movie, or if you're a fan of these types of art books, you would probably dig this.

Tales of Wonder is offering up a special coupon code through my site for 40% off the $49.99 list price. Plus, there's also going to be an autographed copy available by yours truly that will guarantee your book will lose value immediately upon receipt. :) But some people dig the autographed copies, so if that's your scene, order one up.

Here are the links:

ART OF IRON MAN: SIGNED

ART OF IRON MAN: UNSIGNED

The coupon code is STARK

(Make sure to spell correctly and use all caps. The coupon will get you 40% off the list price, for a final book price of $30. The coupon is good through 12/15.)

I have posted some preview images at the MARVEL FORUM and will post a few more in the coming days. Thanks for taking a look at this book!

Marvel offers up another Iron Man Masterworks next week! Iron Man Masterworks Vol. 5 HC is the 107th volume in the Masterworks library and is the first edition issued since the monumental success of the Iron Man movie. Will this Masterworks make over 500 million worldwide like the movie? Doubtful. But it ought to provide several hours worth of fun reading for the price of a few movie tickets.

X-Men: Magik – Storm & Illyana MPE HC is another classic hardcover from Marvel, reprints the mid-'80s limited series by Chris Claremont and John Buscema that introduced Colossus' little sister to the nether-demon Belasco! Magik was born, and since Marvel has big things planned for her next year, now is the time to reprint this X-Men mini.

Another classic reprint comes from DC, and it's Jack Kirby's The Demon Omnibus HC, which reprints the entire 16-issue series written and drawn by The King. It's a 384-page hardcover in DC's relatively new Omnibus format, and it joins the complete Fourth World in the library.

Another book of note is New X-Men by Grant Morrison Ultimate Collection Book 3 TP, which brings the last of the Morrison run that redefined the X-Men for a new century back into print. It collects New X-Men #142-154, with art by Chris Bachalo, Phil Jimenez, and for the four-issue arc that concludes the volume, Marc Silvestri.

DC finally reprints JLA/Avengers TP in softcover, and more of the '80s-era JLI gets its due in hardcover in Justice League International Vol. 3 HC, which reprints JLI #14-22 by Keith Giffen, JM DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire.

And don't miss Zot! 1987-1991: The Complete Black and White Collection HC. Reprinting everything from Scoutt McCloud's seminal work, this is a special signed edition from Harper Collins.

Oh, and before I forget: The 16th volume of Dark Horse's reprints of Marvel era Conan. Wow! The solicit doesn't offer a complete account of the contents of Chronicles of Conan Vol. 16: Eternity War and Other Stories TP, but I'll pass on word when I get it.

SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER NOVEMBER 5
Posted at 7:00 PM by gormuu

Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping today from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, November 5.

Lots of classic comics are shipping today! Here's a quick rundown on some of the best from the Big Two publishers. First up, Absolute Sandman Vol. 4 HC, which is the final of four volumes collecting all of Neil Gaiman's influential masterpiece, reprints Sandman #57-75 and Vertigo Jam #1.

Also from DC are a pair of Wonder Woman tomes, one in color, one in black and white. Diana Prince Wonder Woman Vol. 3 TP reprints Wonder Woman #190-198 and World's Finest #204 from her early '70s adventures. For hardcover fans of Watchmen who don't have the ultra-rare Graffitti edition or the expensive Absolute Edition, be sure to check out the affordably priced Watchmen HC, a regular format hardcover edition that uses the same art files as the Absolute.

And the book of the week is a personal favorite: New Teen Titans Vol. 4 HC, which reprints New Teen Titans #21-27 and Annual #1. Sadly, this was announced to be the last NTT Archive edition. I hope this isn't so, as there is still plenty of great Wolfman/Perez material to cover.

Atlas Era Journey Into Mystery Vol. 1 HC
Collects Journey Into Mystery #1-10
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping today from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, October 29.

A little housekeeping from last week: The variant covers to Elektra by Frank Miller Omnibus HC and Tomb of Dracula Vol. 1 Omnibus HC begin shipping next week, so those readers will finally get their mitts on a couple books that have been getting pretty solid reviews on the board forums.

As for the week in new releases, there's a diverse range of material available. Essential Marvel Horror Vol. 2 TP pulls together stories from a bunch of early '70s anthology titles like Strange Tales, Supernatural Thrillers and Haunt of Horror to tell the stories of Marvel horror stalwarts like Brother Voodoo, Golem, Gabriel the Devil Hunter and the Living Mummy. At 616 pages, there's plenty of frightful black and white tales to keep you up on All Hallow's Eve! The piece de resistance for Halloween reading from Marvel is Journey Into Mystery Masterworks Vol. 1 HC, which collects the pre-Code tales of Marvel's Atlas Era from JIM #1-10. Work from Gene Colan, John Romita, Russ Heath, Jerry Robinson, Joe Maneely and more dot the contents of this treasure.

Marvel has a gem of a classic trade coming to us this week. Spider-Man: A New Goblin TP collects Amazing Spider-Man #176-180. It's a concise little 96 page trade, but it features a rarely reprinted battle between Spidey and the Green Goblin!

Dark Horse offers up Mister X Archives HC, which reprints the atmospheric Dean Motter classic that featured the work of Jaime Hernandez and Dave McKean, among others. This HC is hyped as being fully remastered, and it clocks in at 384 pages. (Yes, I'm buying!)

And DC adds to its extensive collection of Hellblazer trades by reaching back to the early Delano years: Hellblazer: Family Man TP reprints Hellblazer #23-24 and #28-33.

Don't forget to apply the $5 off coupon noted in the news update below towards any orders made before October 28th!

SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER OCTOBER 22
Posted at 11:00 AM by gormuu

Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping today from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, October 22.

The collected editions deluge always begins about this time of year, right in time for Halloween. I don't imagine a lot of these will be bought in bulk to hand out to the kiddies along with candied apples and NECCO wafers, but if so, you have plenty of options!

First up for the Halloween programming is Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein HC, the lushly illustrated, black and white, 1983 retelling of Mary Shelley's novel by Bernie Wrightson. It is available in hardcover from Dark Horse. Another adaptation of horror literature is Haunt of Horror: Lovecraft HC, another Richard Corben vehicle following up on the success of his Poe collection from 2006. This reprints the three issue Haunt of Horror: Lovecraft series.

One of the two editions of Tomb of Dracula Omnibus Vol. 1 HC squeaks out for release this Wednesday, this being the regular edition featuring the cover to TOD #1 by John Buscema. (The Gene Colan variant will be along on 10/29.) This doorstopper of a book reprints Tomb of Dracula #1-31, Werewolf by Night #15, Giant-Size Chillers #1 and Giant-Size Dracula #2-4. Another Omnibus hits stores, but like Dracula, only the regular edition cover – variant buyers will have to wait another week. Elektra by Frank Miller Omnibus HC collects Elektra: Assassin #1-8, the Elektra Lives Again graphic novel, Bizarre Adventures #28 and What If? #35. (Maybe you don't think Elektra fits into Halloween programming, but if you met her in a dark alley, you'd be very, very scared!)

And the final in our trio of "regular cover/variant cover" shipping foibles, X-Force Vol. 1: Angels and Demons MPE HC will be shipping its "Bloody Variant" edition but not the regular edition this week. The Clayton Crain cover featuring blood dripping from Warpath's knives, Wolfsbane's fangs and Wolverine's claws makes the perfect addition to any Halloween flavored book shelf. But for those looking for the more "tame" version, you'll ave to wait a week!

Marvel also delivers two frustratingly late editions in the Marvel Premiere Edition Classic line: MPE Classic Vol. 14: Longshot HC, which reprints the six-issue series by Ann Nocenti and Art Adams, is finally here, along with Vol. 15: Hulk – The Heart of the Atom HC, which collects Incredible Hulk #140, 148, 156, 202-203, 205-207, 246-248 and What If? #23, the story of Hulk's love affair with Jarella.

DC has some cool books on its schedule as well, though nothing with a Halloween bent. Legion of Super Heroes: Enemy Rising HC reprints LOSH #37-44, featuring Jim Shooter's return to the title that made him famous as a teenage comic book creator!

The Spirit: Femme Fatales TP is a 192-page color trade that reprints Spirit stories starring the most formidable females to grace Will Eisner's art board. Showcase Presents World's Finest Vol. 2 TP collects World's Finest #112-145, taking us well past the point where the Archives left off.

Perhaps the biggest release of the week is Y the Last Man Deluxe Edition HC, which collects the first ten issues of the acclaimed series by Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra and Jose Marzan, Jr. For those of us who've never read this series, this is the perfect way to start!

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein HC
Catwoman: Crime Pays TP
Elektra by Frank Miller Omnibus HC *book trade*
The Evil Dead TP
Friday the 13th Vol. 2 TP
Haunt of Horror: Lovecraft MPE HC
Heavy Liquid HC
MPE Classic Vol. 15: Hulk - Haart of the Atom HC
Hulk: Heart of the Atom MPE Classic HC
Judge Dredd Complete Case Files Vol. 11 TP

MPE Classic Vol. 14: Longshot HC
Longshot MPE Classic HC
Mighty Avengers Vol. 2: Venom Bomb TP
Northlanders Vol. 1: Sven the Returned TP
Showcase Presents World's Finest Vol. 2 TP
The Spirit: Femme Fatales TP
Steve Niles Omnibus TP

STAN'S SOAPBOX COLUMNS COLLECTED!
Posted at 7:10 PM by gormuu

The Hero Initiative is on fire with some really great books designed to raise money for their worthy charity. Following up on their partnership with Marvel to deliver the Gene Colan Tribute Book comes a 144-page collection of all of Stan Lee's Soapboxes from the Bullpen Bulletin columns from 1967-1980. According to THIS LINK at the Hero Initiative blogspot, a softcover trade will be available on November 19. It will sell for $14.99.

Of course, any true Masterworks fan is going to want the hardcover edition for $34.99! There's also a signed Stan Lee edition autographed by Stan The Man for a cool $99. But it's all for a good cause, as the Hero Initiatve provides financial support for comics creators who are in genuine need.

The hardcovers are limited to 250 in quantity, so if you want one, order now! I'm placing an order after I post this for the non-signed edition and it's going to go right on my shelf amongst all my Masterworks!

X-Men Masterworks Vol. 7
Collects Beast from Amazing Adventures #11-17 and more "Missing Years" appearances of the X-Men!
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping today from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, October 15.

DC leads this week's releases with a book nobody ever thought they'd see: the penultimate volume of Spirit strips in Will Eisner's Spirit Archives Vol. 25 HC, which rounds up the strips from October 1941 through March 1944. This leaves the last volumes of the series, due in December, to round up all the rest of the Spirit arcana left behind by Will Eisner. Congrats to DC for making this happen, and a bigger congrats awaits when that final volume is issued!

A couple softcovers of note from DC: Batman Chronicles Vol. 6 TP pulls together Detective Comics #62-66, Batman #10-11 and World's Finest #5-6 featuring the Caped Crusader's Golden Age adventures. Also, JLA: That Was Then This Is Now TP collects JLA Classified #50-54 by a couple old pros you might have heard of: Roger Stern and John Byrne! Grab this one and then get ready for Uncle Rog's new issue of Amazing Spider-Man heading our way next month!

Marvel's big book this week is another book nobody thought they'd see when Masterworks got revved back up for keeps in 2003. X-Men Masterworks Vol. 7 HC is the first of two planned "Missing Years" X-Men volumes that collects material from between 1970's X-Men #66, the last issue to feature the old guard X-Men, and 1975's Giant-Size X-Men #1, featuring the "All-New, All-Different" X-Men. This volume reprints the Beast solo stories from Amazing Adventures #11-17 plus mutant appearances in Amazing Spider-Man #92, Incredible Hulk #150 and 161, and Marvel Team-Up #4, plus the covers of X-Men #67-80. Look for a X-Men Masterworks Vol. 8 sometime in the future.

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Batman Chronicles Vol. 6 TP
Crossing Midnight Vol. 3: Sword in the Soul TP
Ex Machina Vol. 7: Ex Cathedra TP
JLA: That Was Then This Is Now TP
Jonah Hex: Luck Runs Out TP
Marvel Adventures The Avengers Vol. 7 Digest
MM Vol. 105: X-Men HC
X-Men Masterworks Vol. 7 HC
Scalped Vol. 3: Dead Mothers TP
Sentences: The Life of MF Grimm TP
War Is Hell: First Flight of the Phantom Eagle MPE HC

Annihilation Classic HC
Oversized HC reprints classic cosmic origin stories!
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping today from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, October 8.

Marvel has a couple collections of note to classic comics fans. First up is an oversized hardcover with over 200 pages of origin stories featuring the cast of the recent Annihilation Events. Annihilation Classic HC collects all four issues of the '80s limited series Rocket Raccoon, plus stories featuring Bug of the Micronauts (Bug #1), the tree creature Groot (Tales to Astonish #13), Nova #1, Quasar #1, Captain Universe (Marvel Spotlight #6), Thanos (Logan's Run #6) and Warlock (Marvel Premiere #1). Also, the furious onslaught of Iron Man trades continues with Iron Man: The Dragon Seed Saga TP, which collects Iron Man #270-275, a showdown with the Mandarin by John Byrne, Paul Ryan and Mark Bright.

Dark Horse's release schedule of oddball Archives continues with Roy Rogers Archives Vol. 1 HC, which collects Dell Four-Color Comics #38, 63, 86, 95 and 109. That's 240 pages of Roy Rogers and his trusty horse, Trigger! I'm a huge fan of Joss Whedon, so Serenity: Better Days TP is a notable release on this week's schedule. Firefly fans can get their fix of new stories, as this reprints Serenity: Better Days #1-3.

And another key Dark Horse release this week is the second volume of Hellboy hardcovers. Hellboy Library Vol. 2: Chained Coffins, the Right Hand of Doom, and Others HC collects fifteen stories, "presented for the first time in chronological order." I missed a lot of these great Mignola stories first time around, so I'm pretty juiced about this series of deluxe books.

And finally, DC offers up Showcase Presents Blackhawk Vol. 1 TP, which jumps to the 1950s to start reprinting their adventures. It collects Blackhawk #108-127 and clocks in at 512 pages.

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Annihilation Classic HC
Batman and the Outsiders Vol. 1: The Chrysalis TP
Birds of Prey: Metropolis or Dust TP
Daredevil: Cruel and Unusual TP
DC Comics Goes Ape TP
DC Vault: Museum in a Book HC
Hellboy Library Vol. 2: Chained Coffin HC

Iron Man: The Dragon Seed Saga TP
Punisher MAX Vol. 10: Valley Forge TP
Roy Rogers Archives Vol. 1 HC
Serenity: Better Days TP
Showcase Presents Blackhawk Vol. 1 TP

Also, since I missed last week's release schedule, here's the list of books that shipped last week on October 1:

Boys Vol. 3 TP
Cairo SC

THE DC SCHEDULE SLIDE
Posted at 4:00 PM by gormuu

No, it's not a Justin Timberlake dance move. It's the "DC Slide", that time when we get to shove DC's slate of collected editions down a week or two or three to their new home on the release schedule. Why this phenomenon persists is a mystery to me, but it sure is hell keeping up with it! I'd note all the changes in the schedule, but that would take a lot more time than I have. What I will say is that the release schedule on the left sidebar has been updated with all DC stock being moved to their newly scheduled dates. Also, the new bottleneck date is October 22. Look for many of the books on that date to be pushed back at some point in the next couple weeks. I'll update the list again at that point.

There are a bunch of books shipping out tomorrow, including several high profile hardcover releases. First up, from DC: Absolute Ronin HC pulls together all six issues of the Frank Miller mini-series from 1984-1984. Along with all the attendant special features and bonus material, this Absolute edition clocks in at 328 pages.

Other DC releases of note include Showcase Presents Metal Men Vol. 2 TP, which reprints Metal Men #16-36 and Brave and the Bold #66, and Batman Black and White Vol. 3 TP which collects stories from Batman: Gotham Knights #17-49 by top drawer talent like Ed Brubaker, Darwyn Cooke, Mike Mignola, While Portacio and others.

At Marvel, Iron Man legends David Michelinie and Bob Layton reunite for Iron Man: Legacy of Doom MPE HC, which reprints the four-issue limited series that is the conclusion to the Camelot Trilogy, the first parts of which were recently reprinted in MPE Classic HC. This series is pencilled by Ron Lim, whose work with Layton looks really great.

One of the very first Marvel Knights series gets reprinted in MPE HC format. Marvel Boy MPE HC reprints Marvel Boy #1-6 by Grant Morrison and J.G. Jones. The trade paperback of this story has long been out of print and going for big bucks on the back market, and now it is in HC for the first time.

Iron Man: Legacy of Doom MPE HC

Clocking in at 272 pages, this Masterworks edition features every single page of the Sub-Mariner title from the Atlas Era heroes revival in the mid-'50s.

Outside of the Big 2 publishers, there is a nice handful of key hardcover releases from which to choose. IDW delivers Complete Terry & the Pirates Vol. 4: 1941-1942 HC, which continues the reprinting of Milton Caniff's immensely influential newspaper strip. Dark Horse offers up Conan Vol. 6: The Hand of Nergal HC, which picks up where the last HC left off, and Nemesis Archives Vol. 1 HC, a 264-page "done-in-one" hardcover that reprints the complete ACG series. MESSAGE BOARD FORUMS LINK/BOOKMARKS

Posted at 8:00 PM by gormuu

Since the forum changed over from ezboard to yuku earlier this year, the old link URLs imbedded into this website have forwarded to the new forum server. Of late, however, many people (including yours truly) have had trouble reaching the new forum landing. I have updated the links to the new forum URL on the Home Page, the Current News Page and the Masterworks Library page, so that in linking from those three pages one will not have to depend on the erratic forwarding which sometimes will but most time won't do the trick.

I'll update the rest of the pages across the site, but that'll take some time. In the meantime, I'd recommend visiting the forum and resetting any bookmarks you have on your browser. The correct link is the following:

Fantastic Four Masterworks Vol. 11
Reprints Fantastic Four #105-116
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping this week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, September 17.

It's been a long time since the last FF Masterworks, so this week's new Masterworks edition takes us into new territory! Fantastic Four Masterworks Vol. 11 HC is the first post-Kirby volume to hit the Masterworks canon. (Look for a few pages of Kirby art scrounged up off the cutting room floor for use in FF #108, however!) John Busceme settles in to fills the shoes of the King, and this volume tips in at 272 pages.

Another Marvel HC I'd like to highlight from this week's releases is Amazing Spider-Man: Brand New Day Vol. 3 MPE HC. Yes, the concept behind this new Spidey status quo has taken quite a beating from some fan's and critic's quarters. But this volume, which reprints ASM #559-563, has three issues of the most dynamic Spidey art I've seen in years by an artist named Marcos Martin. If you love your Spidey with a Ditko flair, you have to check out Martin's work, especially his out of this world layouts, and Dan Slott's story perfectly matches Martin's strengths.

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Amazing Spider-Man: Brand New Day Vol. 3 MPE HC
Captain America Vol. 2: The Death of Captain America TP
Essential Iron Man Vol. 1 TP *new printing*
Essential OHOTMU Master Edition Vol. 3 TP
Gene Colan Tribute Book Cover A
Gene Colan Tribute Book Cover B
Gene Colan Tribute Book Cover C
Incredible Hercules: Against the World TP
JSA Presents Green Lantern TP
Justice League of America Vol. 1: Tornado's Path TP
MM Vol. 103: Fantastic Four HC
Fantastic Four Masterworks Vol. 11 HC
Power Pack: Day One Digest

Ultra Vol. 1: Seven Days TP *new printing*

Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping this week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, September 10.

DC offers up a couple really cool Bat-Books this week. First, Batman: The Black Glove HC collects Batman #667-669 and 672-675 by Grant Morrison and J.H. Williams III. And for some seminal Ed Brubaker Bat-Action, check out Gotham Central Vol. 1: In the Line of Fire HC, which reprints the first ten issues of the Eisner Award-winning series that first established Bru and artist Michael Lark as a creative force to be reckoned with.

Jonathan Lethem and Farel Dalyrmple's reimagination of Steve Gerber and Mary Skeates Omega the Unknown MPE HC hits store shelves. The original '70s iteration was unlike any other series at the time, and the same can easily be said of this remake. GOLDEN AGE MASTERWORKS: A READER'S PERSPECTIVE
Posted at 11:30 AM by gormuu

I'd like to highlight a thread that just started at the Marvel Forum. It's titled Doing The GA Masterworks The Right Way and it's composed by message boards contributor d nab kasnar. It says a lot of things about the newly revived GA program and it says them well. After reading, maybe you can chime in with your opinion.

The GA program did indeed start with a sputter and a couple false starts, first with the nearly universally panned restoration of Golden Age Marvel Comics Masterworks Vol. 1, then with the delay and inconsistent release schedule of subsequent volumes. However, recent volumes have been revelations as far as restoration, and new editions have been coming out at a regular, quarterly clip. Things look bright for the GA line and, in my opinion, it deserves our support!

SEWN BINDING: DAREDEVIL BY BENDIS VOL. 1 OMNIBUS

Posted at 11:30 AM by gormuu

Anybody who is a fan of Brian Michael Bendis' work and who has been following it via either of Marvel's hardcover formats for new material (OHCs and MPEs) knows that of all writers, Bendis' common use of double-page spreads and floating of dialogue across the gutter can cause readability problems. The Alias Omnibus, with its glued (and thus stiffer) binding, suffered from this at times. Well, Marvel has moved the printing of all their Omnibus volumes over to China, where sewn binding now comes standard.

This image was posted at the BENDIS BOARDS at Jinxworld by board member Simpson. Behold, the power of sewn binding:

But all is not perfect: there's a flap about Alex Maleev's name being left off the front cover. Apparently, Bendis is upset about this and has requested some sort of change. Once I get word from Marvel what this might entail, I'll pass it on here. Until then, the book is available for order from retailers everywhere, including site sponsor TALES OF WONDER.

SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER AUGUST 27
Posted at 10:30 PM by gormuu

Golden Age Marvel Comics Vol. 3
Reprints Marvel Mystery Comics #9-12
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping this week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, August 27.

Boy...this is a HUGE week! Let's get cracking. First up is a new EC Archives edition, always cause for celebration. This time, it's Tales From the Crypt Archives Vol. 3 HC, which reprints Tales From the Crypt #13-18.

DC has a nice mix of interesting hardcovers to choose from. First up is Brave and the Bold Vol. 2: The Book of Destiny HC, which reprints issues #7-12 of the new Mark Waid/George Perez/Bob Wiacek series. Also, Metal Men HC reprints the recent 8-issue mini-series by writer/artist Duncan Rouleau. But the coolest book of the week for DC is in their new Deluxe Edition format, which is the same size dimensions as Marvel's OHC line. JLA Deluxe Edition Vol. 1 HC reprints JLA #1-9 and Secret Files and Origins #1 by Grant Morrison, Mark Millar, Howard Porter and others, making it the first HC rendition of this classic '90s series.

One book hardcore Marvel fans will want to take a look at is Young Inhumans TP, a 272-page trade which pulls together the entire 12-issue run of the Sean McKeever series. The first six issues had only ever been available in digest format, while the latter six issues have never been reprinted since their initial publication! Now, they're all together in one book! A must for McKeever fans.

Two classic trades hit store shelves: X-Men: The Complete Onslaught Epic Vol. 3 TP which reprints more of the seminal Marvel Universe story of the late '90s, and Fantastic Four Visionaries: Walter Simonson Vol. 2 TP, which collects FF #432-346 of Walt's early '90s series. (Book clocks in at a slight 120 pages, but at least it has a lower list price.)

And finally, two really big HCs: one in physical size and the other in monumental importance. First, the Daredevil by Brian Michael Bendis Vol. 1 HC is an 848-page tome reprinting all the Bendis stories from Daredevil #16-19, 26-50 and 56-60. (The book prints them in chronological order and skips over story arcs by Bob Gale and David Mack. Fear not: the book reads perfectly well in doing so.) And finally, Golden Age Marvel Comics Vol. 3 HC is here! Reprinting the classic Torch/Subby battle from Marvel Mystery Comics #9 for the first time (in acceptable quality, that is), it compiles four more issues of ultra-rare Golden Age goodies in Masterworks. Keep 'em coming, Marvel!

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

All Star Superman Vol. 1 TP
America's Best Comics Primer TP
Astounding Wolf Man Vol. 1 TP
Brave and the Bold Vol. 2: The Book of Destiny HC
Countdown: Lord Havok and the Extremists TP
Daredevil by Brian Michael Bendis Vol. 1 HC
EC Archives: Tales From the Crypt Vol. 3 HC
Fantastic Four Visionaries: Walt Simonson Vol. 2 TP
JLA Deluxe Edition Vol. 1 HC
Marvel Adventures Iron Man Vol. 3 Digest
Golden Age Marvel Comics Masterworks Vol. 3 HC
MM Vol. 102: GA Marvel Comics HC
Metal Men HC
New Warriors Vol. 2: Thrashed TP
OHOTMU A to Z Vol. 4 MPE HC
She-Hulk Vol. 6: Jaded TP
Suicide Squad: From the Ashes TP
Terry Moore's Echo Vol. 1: Silver Rain TP
Witchblade Vol. 5 TP
X-Men: Legacy Vol. 1: Divided He Stands MPE HC
X-Men: The Complete Onslaught Epic Vol. 3 TP
Young Inhumans TP

SOFTCOVER MASTERWORKS ON THE WAY?
Posted at 10:30 AM by gormuu

Those who've been following THIS THREAD at the Marvel Forum have been wondering what to make of reports of softcover Masterworks coming out in 2009. Well, this is no ghost or mirage on the horizon. Softcover Masterworks are on the way. First off, here is the ad in question:

Amazing Spider-Man Masterworks Vol. 1
Reprints Amazing Spider-Man #88-99
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping today from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, August 20.

Today is the day the 101st Masterworks rolls out to stores, and Marvel starts the next 100 books with the one that started the first 100! Amazing Spider-Man Masterworks Vol. 10 HC collects ASM #88-99, with art by John Romita Sr. and Gil Kane and featuring the legendary Comics Code-defying "drug issues." Another volume of classic Marvel comics comes in the form of Punisher War Journal Classic Vol. 1, a full-color trade that reprints Punisher War Journal #1-8 by Carl Potts with art by Jim Lee.

Marvel also offers up a couple of hardcovers of recent vintage material. First, the simply titled Logan MPE HC features the 3-issue Marvel Knights series by Brian K. Vaughan and artist Eduardo Risso. This book is available in fully-colored and black and white editions. Also, Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane Vol. 2 HC is an oversized affair that pulls together the latter half of writer Sean McKeever's run on the book. It's a 368-page collection that reprints SMLMJ #6-20 and is guaranteed to keep the title's cult audience very happy!

DC has two notable classic releases. Showcase Presents The Atom Vol. 2 TP blows past where the Archives left off and reprints The Atom #18-38 and Atom and the Hawkman #39-45, while Superman Chronicles Vol. 5 TP pulls together 192 pages of Golden Age Man of Steel by reprinting Action Comics #32-36, Superman #8-9 and World's Best Comics #1.

SPIRIT ARCHIVES BUMPED/THE DC COLLECTED EDITIONS CASCADE

Posted at 11:00 AM by gormuu

First up is notice that Spirit Archives Vol. 25 has been bumped from its 8/27 date into the middle of October, 10/15, so it will be another two months before the penultimate volume of Will Eisner's Library is released.

Also, the so-called "DC Cascade" continues. Why this phenomenon is happening is unclear, but for the last couple months, DC has been bumping nearly every collected edition they solicit to the following week. It can be overwhelming trying to keep up with all this stuff, let me tell you! If you check out the release schedule in the left sidebar, I've got DC product correctly listed up through 9/17, where it bottlenecks again. Expect the latter half of that list to get bumped again to the following week, and so on until DC gets this scheduling issue fixed.

BACK-TO-PRESS MASTERWORKS: THE SKINNY

Posted at 10:00 AM by gormuu

At the tail end of last year, we started to see some OOP Masterworks come back to press (BTP) in brand new editions. We got a good half-dozen before the BTP initiative was abruptly shut down. No official word has been put out about what and how the BTP books would come back online, but finally Marvel has it all figured out.

With the move to China for printing Masterworks, the time for the BTP books is now. Starting in January, we'll see two BTP editions released per month until all nine volumes are released.

Here's the schedule:

January
Iron Man Vol. 1 (Vol. 20)
Avengers Vol. 2 (Vol. 9)

February
Thor Vol. 2 (Vol. 26)
Uncanny X-Men Vol. 3 (Vol. 24)

March
Avengers Vol. 3 (Vol. 27)
Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 6 (Vol. 33)

April
X-Men Vol. 4 (Vol. 35)
Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 7 (Vol. 44)

May
Uncanny X-Men Vol. 4 (Vol. 37)

Now, the intimidating news for folks who like to pre-order, particularly those who like to get the variants: all these books are going to be listed in the next September solicits catalog. We already know that catalog will include 2 MM regular solicits for November, 2 MM advance solicits for January, and now these 9 BTP Masterworks. My advice? If you want the BTP variants, prioritize those. But don't stress it. TOW, one of the biggest retailers who stock Masterworks, still has pretty much all the BTP variants from last year/earlier this year in stock, so I really don't think there'll be a mad rush on these things that will deplete supplies.

So there you have it: the move to China has allowed Marvel the cost savings to do all these BTP editions at once, much like they did back in the original "remasterworks" days.

For more details and discussion about the BTP initiative, head straight over to the MARVEL FORUM and read up. I've started a FAQ there to handle a lot of the questions coming in, and maybe one you already have will be answered!

SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER AUGUST 13
Posted at 10:00 AM by gormuu

Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping yesterday from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, August 13.

In the rush to facilitate getting you all this new Masterworks information, I wasn't able to post the list of books that are being released this week. Well, better late than never! DC's big book of the week is Absolute LOEG: The Black Dossier HC, which reprints the original graphic novel by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill. There are tons of bells and whistles that adorn this 200 page Absolute Edition...but whether they justify the $100 list price is something entirely up to you!

A better bargain is Justice League International Vol. 2 HC, in which Marvel continues to mine the classic '80s comedy series by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire. This volume collects Justice League Annual #1, JLI #8-13 and Suicide Squad #13. Another collection of classic '80s material is Millennium TP, which collects the entire 8-issue mini-series event. JANUARY GOLDEN AGE MASTERWORKS ANNOUNCEMENT!
Posted at 7:40 PM by gormuu

Make sure to read the previous day's entry to get caught up on why January's Masterworks volumes are being announced in August! But if you're already caught up, you know it's time for the promised announcement...the companion volume to January's Marvel Age book happens to be a Golden Age volume many folks will be looking forward to – and didn't think they'd see this quickly!

And guess what? There's still more Masterworks announcements to come. Check back tomorrow at this space for yet another "Marvel-ous" bit of news!

JANUARY MARVEL AGE MASTERWORKS ANNOUNCEMENT!
Posted at 10:00 PM by gormuu

This may seem odd, huh? Just yesterday I announced the Marvel Age and Golden Age Masterworks selection for November. Now we're skipping ahead the day after and announcing the January Marvel Age Masterworks volume? Huh?

Well, before I get into the reasons why, here's a link to the first volume of January 2009:

• MARVEL AGE: PREVIEW PAGE

January Masterworks solicits are being announced in the next Marvel solicits cycle because the Masterworks are joining other hardcover lines like the Omniboo and the Marvel Premiere Edition Classics by being printed in China. The logistics of printing on the other side of the planet from the United States requires more lead time for soliciting and retail ordering, so the books can be printed and shipped across the Pacific. We've seen DC Comics advance soliciting virtually all their collected editions for some years now, and Marvel has joined them (at least with some of their hardcovers.)

So this isn't confusing, here's what you can look forward to as far as Masterworks announcements:

1) Look for another January Masterworks announcement tomorrow.
2) Look for December's Masterworks volume to be announced next month, as well as February's volume (or volumes).
3) Starting in October, we'll be getting announcements for Masterworks that are coming out five months in advance.

There you have it. The reasons for why this is going on are discussed at MARVEL FORUM, so head on over there to get into it! Until then, see you tomorrow for the other January book announcement!

And if you think this is the last announcement of the week that's Masterworks related...uh uh! Check back at this space tomorrow for some more fresh news!

MASTERWORKS RESTORATION NON-CONTROVERSY
Posted at 6:00 PM by gormuu

The facts of Marvel's Masterworks/Omnibus restoration have been bandied about on various blogs and internet gossip columns lately. It's not a new topic of conversation around these parts, having been a part of discussion for well over a year now, nor is it anything necessarily under the radar, as Marvel reps from editorial staff to book restoration talent have been interviewed on the site and message boards about this. But some folks like to gin up controversy and treat it like breaking news.

So to catch up folks who might not be up to date on the issues, here are links to a couple threads. First up is a RECENT THREAD that starts off with discussion about the error-laden John Romita Sr. Visionaries hardcover and, roundabout page 3, gets revved up with current discussion about Masterworks by way of Mary Jane Watson.

And next, a link to only the most recent thread about this issue, titled Are we looking at the original art in restored books...or copies?. This is an important issue to many, irrelevant to some, but it would behoove those who want to take part in the discussion to catch up on the facts.

There have been more than a few conversations about this very issue on the message board forums. There are some who really don't like the fact that, in some cases where quality film, stats or original art don't exist to reprint a page of art, that art recreation is necessary to fill in the gaps. They're entitled to have that very valid opinion. But going back to Don Heck lightboxing his old art for Tales of Suspense #50 in Iron Man Masterworks Vol. 1, this has been a necessary evil in order to get these books in on time, on budget and in an orderly release schedule with a bunch of other books competing for editorial attention and consumer dollars.

So catch up on the discussion and see where it leads you...

OOP MASTERWORKS: AN UPDATE

Posted at 7:00 PM by gormuu

There are a pair of Masterworks to add to the list of out-of-print volumes. It's already been bandied about that Fantastic Four Vol. 1 is sold out at Diamond. Well, I've found out that Dr. Strange Vol. 1 and Iron Man Vol. 2 are now also sold out at Diamond. These books are still available at retail, so it's not like a mad rush is necessary to get a copy...but if you want one, I'd prioritize an order for one of them over the next couple months.

I've also heard that there are another small handful of books that will soon be sold out at Diamond. However, until they are, that information won't be forthcoming.

The current list of OOP Masterworks is updated at the MASTERWORKS CORNERSHOP listings. (Look in the column dedicated to Masterworks volume #s and the editions that are shaded in gray are either sold out or in danger of selling out.)

MARVEL'S DAVID GABRIEL CHECKS IN WITH THE MARVEL FORUM
Posted at 12:45 PM by gormuu

Marvel Senior VP of Sales David Gabriel popped in on the message board earlier this week and gave some insights into what the Powers That Be at Marvel are considering for future collected editions. As usual, some of this information will excite, some will disappoint, and some will leave you baffled...always depending on your perspective as a comics fan!

Some of the discussion included the following tidbits:

• No Thor or Tales of Asgard Omnibus "on the horizon"
• No plans for any Master of Kung Fu "for a while"
• Masterworks for 2009? Try Warlock Vol. 2 on for size. As for Human Torch Vol. 2: "No plans for this that I recall...we'll get to it eventually."
• More Classic trades for Invaders, with a clear eye to compiling the entire series.
Inhumans fans will want to keep a close eye on Secret Invasion happenings, which looks like it will parlay into some form of collected editions offerings
Civil War HC on the way, with some thought being put into how to collect the rest of the event in a hardcover format (Omnibus?)
Spider-Man Newspaper Strips looks to be on the schedule for early 2009
• More New Universe Classic trades, plus a start for a Namor Classic line, and possily Guardians of the Galaxy and New Warriors Classic lines.
New Mutants and Alpha Flight Classic trades will forge ahead, but Excalibur Classic looks to be on the backburner. "I think we've done all we can for now", says Gabriel.

David also seemed to be enthused about a fan suggestion of Evolutionary War and Atlantis Attacks as an Omnibus. But that comment seemed to be in the realm of possibility, not necessarily something that is currently being planned.

There's more nuggets in the conversation, so take a few minutes of your time to sift through the thread at THIS THREAD at the Marvel Forum and have a look. David's comments begin at the bottom of page 2, though there's lots of interesting conversation taking place amongst your fellow collected editions fans about the best ways to get your voices heard about upcoming books.

Anyway, thanks to David for checking in with us at the Marvel Forum and teasing a few of the upcoming releases!

AND NOW A WORD FROM STREET POET RAY:
A BTP UPDATE FROM MASTERWORKS EDITOR CORY SEDLMEIER

Posted at 12:45 PM by gormuu

In the thread linked in the previous news item, David Gabriel made the following comment when asked about the Back To Press Masterworks program which were halted earlier this year after the release of a half-dozen volumes: "Those are temporarily stalled...we may pick them up in 09...we may try something new."

Of course, we're all intrigued as to what exactly that means! While we still don't have anything firm, Masterworks Editor Cory Sedlmeier came in to the BTP: MIA OR DOA? thread at the Marvel Forum to clarify the current "State of Masterworks BTP" (his comments begin on Page 3 of the thread):

"BTP is alive and well. The time-intensive work to do the necessary restoration, combined with a special project this past spring, and some big news you'll be hearing about in a month or so have all combined to make waiting the better approach on BTP. We're still whiling away at it. The amount of material that my crew and I will have restored over the course of 2008 will be more than in the entire first 15 years of the Masterworks program, so bear with us. 'K?"

Cory also dished the following image from Marvel's film inventory in which he mysteriously suggested a particular volume that we might see before a "Timely Rarities" volume:

All joking, I'm sure! But who knows? Catch up with the thread for your own take. After all, we wouldn't want to take the timeless rhymes of Street Poet Ray out of context!

As for the interesting developments in the BTP and Masterworks program, keep checking in on the message board forums and this very Current News page!

DC ARCHIVE DELAYS
Posted at 7:45 PM by gormuu

DC has pushed back a couple Archives volumes into July. Seven Soldiers of Victory Archives Vol. 3 is now scheduled for July 23, a full two months after it was initially solicited. And Doom Patrol Archives Vol. 5 is now scheduled for release on July 30, a month late. The release schedule on the left sidebar has been updated with this new information.

EC ARCHIVE DELAYS

Posted at 7:45 PM by gormuu

Another line of books which has had trouble hitting its scheduled release dates are Gemstone's EC Archives. While we await the release of more of these great books, Archives Art Director Mike Kronenberg checks in at the COIC FORUM with a message of encouragement:

"WEIRD SCIENCE 3 is done at the printer and on its way...please remember the printer is in China and it takes a little time for it to get to Diamond. TALES FROM THE CRYPT 3 is being printed as I write this, and next week it will also be on the way to Diamond. I've started work on FRONTLINE COMBAT 1 and HAUNT OF FEAR 1, so you're going to get blitzed with the EC ARCHIVES in the near future."

Sounds good to me! Thanks, Mike!

SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER JUNE 11
Posted at 9:00 AM by gormuu

Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, June 11.

DC once again leads with two big hardcover releases: Absolute Sandman Vol. 3 HC continues with more of Neil Gaiman's career-defining series as it collects "Brief Lives" and other stories of the era; plus Will Eisner's Spirit Archives Vol. 24 HC finishes out DC's amazing run of Spirit hardcovers with the last of Eisner's weekly strips.

In time for the Dark Knight movie comes a collection of Joker classics in the full-color trade Joker: The Greatest Stories Ever Told TP. This volume pulls together stories from Batman #1, 66, 73, 110, 321 and 613; Detective Comics #332, 475 and 613; Batman Black and White Vol. 2; Batman: The Long Halloween #4 and Batman Adventures Annual #1.

A strip reprint to take a look at is IDW's Complete Little Orphan Annie Vol. 1 HC, which collects all strips from the premiere date of August 1924 through October 1927.

Marvel offers up two oversized hardcovers this week: Marvel Zombies 2 HC collects the entirety of Robert Kirkman and Sean Phillips' five-issue sequel to the flesh-eating phenomenon; and for more Kirkman, check out his concluding run on Ultimate X-Men in Ultimate X-Men Vol. 8 HC, which reprints Ultimate X-Men #75-88. Also, I'd like to recommend Incredible Hercules: Against the World MPE HC which collects Incredible Hercules #112-115 and Hulk vs. Hercules: When Titans Collide one-shot. This story evolved out of World War Hulk and, in fact, are the first issues in which ol' Herc took over the numbering from Hulk's series. If you're a fan of the old Bob Layton limited series from the '80s, this series, set in current Marvel continuity, carries on with the same spirit.

Finally, Kirby fans who've been shut out of their Eternals-reading experience by the stark unavailability of the Eternals Omnibus will want to consider Eternals by Jack Kirby Vol. 1 TP. This full-color trade paperback collects the first eleven issues of the '70s series by King Kirby.

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Absolute Sandman Vol. 3 HC
Alter Ego #78
Captain America Vol. 1: Death of Captain America TP
Complete Little Orphan Annie Vol. 1 HC
Eternals by Jack Kirby Vol. 1 TP
Full Color Guide to Marvel Silver Age Collectibles SC

HASBRO'S GI JOE LICENSE LANDS AT IDW
Posted at 3:00 PM by gormuu

As noted at NEWSARAMA, the G.I. Joe license has found a new home at IDW Publishing. First located at Marvel for over a decade, then at Devil's Due for the better part of the last decade, it is now at IDW where it will be exploited not only for a new monthly comic series, but also a reprint initiative. The press release is short on explicit details, but here's what it has to say about collected editions:

"In 2009, IDW will also produce comic series both inspired by and based on the upcoming G.I. JOE live-action major motion picture from Paramount Pictures and Hasbro slated for August 7, 2009, as well as deluxe reprints from the vast G.I. JOE vs. COBRA comic history. The planned IDW comic book projects will be distributed to a wide audience through comic book outlets, trade bookstores and mass retailers."

Marvel and Hasbro hooked up to collect the first 50 issues of G.I. Joe in a series of five tradepaperbacks, but that was all we got. Here's hoping that IDW is able to continue where that left off!

EC ARCHIVES UPDATE

Posted at 12:00 PM by gormuu

Earlier this week, at the CRISIS FORUM, EC Archives art director and editor Mike Kronenberg updated folks on the status of upcoming titles. For one thing, Weird Science Archives Vol. 3 appears to be ready to ship next week, with Tales From the Crypt Vol. 3 ready to ship June 21st. I'll monitor these release dates and let you know if they hit their target. (Unfortunately, it's been a crazy game to keep up with EC's release schedule!)

Mike makes further comment about Frontline Combat Vol. 1:

"I finished the color proofs for FRONTLINE COMBAT 1. I should be starting design and production soon. So after TALES FROM THE CRYPT 3, it will be FRONTLINE COMBAT. BTW, FRONTLINE COMBAT looks great! I think you guys will love it. Kurtzman ratcheting up the combat and the thought provoking stories. It will contain one of my favorite EC war stories 'The Big If...'"

Apparently, Frontline Combat Vol. 1 won't hit its solicited release date of 6/12, but Mike's enthusiasm for the continued success of the line implies we'll definitely continue seeing more of these classic comics in the new color Archives format!

Essential Rampaging Hulk Vol. 1
Reprints Rampaging Hulk #1-9, The Hulk! #10-15 and Incredible Hulk #269
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping this week from Tales of Wonder, on Thursday, May 29. (PLEASE NOTE: Due to Memorial Day holiday on Monday, shipping has been pushed back from Wednesday to Thursday.)

DC leads the pack this week with a pair of deluxe hardcovers. From the '70s, we get a companion to the Fourth World Omnibus volumes in Jack Kirby's O.M.A.C. HC, a complete accounting of Jack's underrated series from 1974-1975 featuring the titular One Man Army Corp. It collects O.M.A.C. #1-8 plus extras. And from the '90s, one of the most popular and critically-acclaimed series by James Robinson and Tony Harris, a revival of Jack Burnley's Golden Age hero mythos in Starman Omnibus Vol. 1 HC. This is the first in a series of deluxe hardcovers reprinting the entire series, and it collects Starman #0-16 plus a host of extras.

Marvel doesn't offer up any hardcovers this week, but they are flush with reprints of classic material. The long-awaited Essential Rampaging Hulk TP is the top release, with the black and white mag finally getting its due in Essential format. It collects Rampaging Hulk #1-9, The Hulk! #10-15 and Incredible Hulk #269.

And two color tradepaperbacks in the mutant ouevre make their way to stores this week: X-Men: The Complete Onslaught Epic Vol. 2 TP clocks in at 248 pages and reprints the crossover event as it spilled into the pages of Spider-Man, Punisher, Green Goblin and several other mutant-stable titles; and Excalibur Classic Vol. 5 TP, a reprint line which is chugging right along! This collection reprints Excalibur #29-34 and the Weird War III graphic novel.

IDW publishes the first volume of John Byrne's '90s era Next Men series, with over 300 pages of the series (issues #0-12) in a black and white, Essentials-style, softcover volume titled The Compleat Next Men Vol. 1 TP. And speaking of Essentials-style editions, Dark Horse continues with their softcover collections of the classic '70s-era black and white Conan mags with Savage Sword of Conan Vol. 3 TP, which collects Savage Sword of Conan #25-31, full of art by Barry Windsor-Smith, Jim Starlin, Pablo Marcos, John Buscema, Walt Simonson and more.

Finally, fans of Essentials, Archives and Omnibus books might want to check out Image's release for the week: The Nearly Complete Essential Hembeck Archives Omnibus! (Obviously, this is not a book for Masterworks fans!) This softcover edition compiles all previous Hembeck collections plus a bunch of other stuff, including an introduction by Stan Lee.

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

All New Atom Vol. 3: The Hunt For Ray Palmer TP
Black Adam: The Dark Age TP
Compleat Next Men Vol. 1 TP
Countdown to Final Crisis Vol. 1 TP
Essential Rampaging Hulk Vol. 1 TP
Excalibur Classic Vol. 5 TP

MARVEL SCHEDULING MOVES

Posted at 9:15 AM by gormuu

DC is not alone in shuffling around their collected editions schedule. Marvel has several significant books being pushed back from their original release dates. Here's a current list:

Daredevil by Brian Michael Bendis Omnibus Vol. 1 HC moves from 6/4 to 7/23
Eternals by Jack Kirby Book 1 TP moves from 6/4 to 6/11
Astonishing X-Men Vol. 4: Unstoppable TP moves from 6/11 to 6/18
All-New OHOTMU A to Z Vol. 3 MPE HC moves from 6/11 to 6/25
Kabuki: The Alchemy HC (regular and signed editions) moves from 6/11 to 7/9
Marvels MPE Classic HC (regular and variant editions) moves from 6/18 to 6/25
Ultimate Iron Man II MPE HC (book market and direct market editions) moves from 7/16 to 8/6
Longshot MPE Classic HC (regular and variant editions) moves from 8/6 to 10/1

I've also removed Howard the Duck Omnibus HC (regular and Marko Djurdjevic variant) from the "Running Late" list to its new shipping date on 7/23. This was a book originally solicited for February release, but in the wake of Steve Gerber's death, was pushed back to the summer.

Thanks to Cleazer for noting there schedule changes! The release schedule on the left sidebar has been updated to reflect them.

OTHER DC SELL OUTS OF NOTE
Posted at 11:00 AM by gormuu

Keeping up with items on DC's backlist that have sold out and are now out of print:

Absolute DC: The New Frontier HC
Watchmen: The Absolute Edition HC
V For Vendetta HC *new edition*
JLA/Avengers: The Collectors Edition Oversized Slipcased HC

Also, both Gotham Central Vol. 1-2 TPs have sold out. Usually, DC keeps their softcover trades in print, but with a Deluxe Edition coming out in September that reprints the contents of these two books, this might not be the case. (For completists, there were some Renee Montoya stories from Detective and Batman Chronicles reprinted in Vol. 2 that weren't mentioned in the solicit for the Deluxe Edition HC, so this trade may be the only collected edition to carry them.)

Some of these books are still in stock at TOW or other retailers. If you don't have them and want them, now is the time to go hunt them down.

COMPLETE ONSLAUGHT BOOK 3 TP UPDATED CONTENTS

Posted at 11:00 AM by gormuu

The original solicit for X-Men: The Complete Onslaught Epic Book 3 TP listed incorrect contents. Thanks to Jeph York for digging up the correct contents through Marvel, and here they are:

X-MEN #55, UNCANNY X-MEN #336, CABLE #35, X-FORCE #58, X-MAN #19, INCREDIBLE HULK v2 #445, IRON MAN #332, AVENGERS #402, THOR #502, WOLVERINE v2 #105

This is still slated to be a 248 page trade, despite the contents correction. It is due to ship August 27.

RELEASE SCHEDULE SIDEBAR UPDATED
Posted at 11:00 AM by gormuu

The release schedule on the left sidebar has been updated through today, including links to books recently added to TOW's inventory. Keep an eye on DC's hardcover release schedule, as they've continually been pushing their hardcover books down the line a week or so at a time. It's been hard to keep up with, but I think things have settled down for now...at least through their July 2 books.

SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER APRIL 30
Posted at 7:00 PM by gormuu

Adam Strange Archives Vol. 3
Reprints Mystery In Space #81-91, Hawkman #18 and Strange Adventures #157
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, April 30.

This is a week with several interesting releases from all the major publishing companies. First up is Adam Strange Archives Vol. 3. With all the turmoil the DC Archives line has been going through, it's at least nice to know that DC's short term goal is to finish off lines that are easily reachable through one or two volumes, and that includes this third and final volume of classic Infantino/Anderson Adam Strange art.

In the same week we see a volume from the full-color hardcover Archives, we get a volume of black and white, softcover Showcase Presents. This time around it's Showcase Presents Challengers of the Unknown Vol. 2, reprinting Challs #18-37, spanning the years 161-1964.

Dark Horse finally delivers Neil Gaiman's elusive Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch HC, a book that has seen many delays since it was first solicited. There is also another installment in their hardcover Archives library in the form of The Complete Green Lama Archives with the subtitle Featuring the Art of Mac Raboy. This collects the first four issues of the 40s era Green Lama comic series, and it includes all the backup features of the books.

Marvel chimes in with another in their series of Marvel Premiere Edition Classic HCs. In the 11th volume of the series, Marvel taps Mike Zeck and Steve Grant's classic 1985 limited series in Punisher: Circle of Blood. The most recent X-Men event is compiled in its entirety in oversized HC in Messiah Complex HC, and writer J. Michael Straczynski may have gone from the fire of "One More Day" to a very satisfyingly comfortable frying pan in the revival of Thor. Thor by J. Michael Straczynski MPE HC reprints the first six issues of the series that has genuinely astonished many of the people reading it. It's managed to stay at the top of the sales charts since its release and seems to be a breakout hit. Guess it's easier to revive Asgard than put a genie back in a bottle?

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Adam Strange Archives Vol. 3 HC
All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z Vol. 2 MPE HC
Alter Ego #77
Black Panther: Little Green Men TPB
BPRD Vol. 8: Killing Ground
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Omnibus Vol. 4 TPB
Complete Green Lama Featuring the Art of Mac Raboy HC
Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch HC
Fantastic Four: Beginning of the End TPB
Mystery in Space Vol. 2 TPB
Punisher: Circle of Blood MPE Classic HC
MPE Classic Vol. 11: Punisher - Circle of Blood HC
Showcase Presents Challengers of the Unknown Vol. 2 TPB
Superman/Batman Vol. 6: Torment HC
Supernatural Origins TPB
Thor by J. Michael Straczynski Vol. 1 MPE HC
X-Men: Messiah Complex HC

I've updated the Marvel Premiere Edition listings through last month's solicits. It's amazing to see how many of these have been published since the first one only a couple years ago. By my count, there are 90 of the regular titles and 14 of the Premiere Classics. Whew!

In fact, now that the Premiere Classic line has gotten its legs and has darted into double digit territory, I've given it its own listings page. Access them now by checking out the left hand release schedule sidebar and scrolling down for the MPE category. As always, let me know if I've missed anything or have entered some bad data, and I once again appreciate any purchases through the site links to site sponsors TOW and Amazon!

DC COLLECTED EDITIONS NEWS

Posted at 9:45 AM by gormuu

Now for some news that hit last week concerning the future of DC's collected editions. (Thanks to forum member Lightning and Chemicals for transcribing notes from the CSNsider column from last week's issue of Comic Shop News, which you can find at THIS LINK. At that thread is also a spirited discussion about what the following news means.)

Here is the text from CSN:

- DC has two more high-profile Absolute editions scheduled for late 2008. Absolute Ronin, featuring an upscale treatment of the Frank Miller series, and Absolute Sandman Volume Four, the final slipcased volume collecting Neil Gaiman's legendary long-form fantasy saga.

- Following in the same format as Superman Chronicles and Batman Chronicles, DC will launch Wonder Woman Chronicles and Green Lantern Chronicles in 2009.

- DC's Deluxe Editions hardcover line, will continue in 2008 and 2009 with such offerings as Jack Kirby's OMAC Omnibus, Jack Kirby's Demon Omnibus, DC Illustrated by Neal Adams, and Camelot 3000.

- Recut deluxe editions of Brian K. Vaughan & Pia Guerra's Y, The Last Man are also in the works, as are recut editions of Warren Ellis & Darick Robertson's Transmetropolitan.

- In spite of earlier reports of their demise, DC Archives will continue in 2008 and 2009, although in reduced numbers, focusing on continuing already-established Archives series.

- To replace DC Archives in the collected editions schedule, the company will offer a line of DC Comics Classics Library hardcovers in 2009. "We want to feature classic stories and classic creators in upscale format hardcovers," DC's Georg Brewer said. "The stories have to be older than ten years, cannot be recently collected in hardcover, and aren't a part of an ongoing series." Look for info on the first volumes in the DC Comics Classics Library series in an upcoming issue of CSN.

BACK FROM AN EXTENDED ABSENCE
Posted at 2:00 PM by gormuu

Hey everybody! I've been absent from updating the website and participating on the message boards for the last few weeks due to some unexpected upheaval in my personal life. I'm still sorting through all that stuff, but I was able to do a few things for the site today and will be doing some more over the weekend. I hope nobody was too put out by my disappearing act, but I wasn't feeling too good there for a while and had tons of work obligations piling up on me in the meantime, and I just had to take a vacation for a bit.

The good news is that we'll be ready for beta testing the Masterworks Survey...quicker than you might think! I'll be posting more about that on the message board tonight and the weekend, looking for volunteers to kick the tires on the survey. There'll also be some more exciting announcements coming your way concerning upcoming Masterworks and NYCC-related news.

Thanks for your patience and support. To all the people who reached out to me over the last few weeks, I really appreciate it, even if I wasn't able to reply to you all. I will in due time. One of the best things about maintaining this site over the last seven years has been all the great friends I've made. Many of you I've met in person, many more I haven't yet, but your friendship and sense of camaraderie has always been one of the best assets of living a life that is, in part, on "the internets".

SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER MARCH 5

Posted at 2:00 PM by gormuu

Iron Man: Demon In A Bottle
Marvel Premiere Edition Classic HC
Reprints Iron Man #120-128
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, March 5.

The big release this week is Mark Evanier's Kirby: King of Comics HC, billed as an "authorized, visual celebration" of the life and legend of Jack Kirby and his work in comics. Mark has been working on this book over the last several years and we finally are seeing the fruits of his labor. There is a planned two-volume HC that will be even more expansive than this bio, but that will not be in the offing for a couple years.

There are several options for fans of classic Marvel comics next week, two of which are from the '90s era of X-Men lore. First off is Cable Classic Vol. 1 TPB, which collects Cable's first appearance in New Mutants #87, both issues of the Blood and Metal limited series (with art by John Romita, Jr.) and Cable #1-4. The second classic X-Men trade kicks off the crossover event that pitted X-Men vs. their arch enemy Apocalypse in X-Men vs. Apocalypse Vol. 1: The Twelve TPB. This collects Uncanny X-Men #376-377, Cable #73-76, X-Men #96-97, Wolverine #145-147 and X-Men 1999 Yearbook.

Reaching back to the 1970s, Dark Horse publishes more of Marvel's Conan the Barbarian by Roy Thomas and John Buscema. Chronicles of Conan Vol. 14: Shadow of the Beast and Other Stories reprints Conan #108-115 in full color.

Back to Marvel, the Marvel Premiere Edition Classic line adds its first Iron Man title with Iron Man: Demon In A Bottle MPE HC, reprinting Iron Man #120-128 in time to capitalize on the upcoming movie. Written and drawn by David Michelinie, Bob Layton and John Romita, Jr., this is perhaps the most timeless Iron Man story of all, charting Tony Stark's descent into alcoholism. Another Marvel HC is Ultimate Power HC, which collects all nine issues of the Ultimate Universe limited series by Brian Michael Bendis, Jeph Loeb, J. Michael Straczynski and Greg Land. (This is in the oversized HC format.)

DC isn't to be forgotten when it comes to classic material in trade. Next week sees the release of the sixth title in the Man of Steel series which compiles the late '80s Byrne era. Superman: The Man of Steel Vol. 6 TPB reprints Superman #12, Superman Annual #1, Action Comics #594-595, Action Comics Annual #1, Adventures of Superman Annual #1 and Booster Gold #23. Also, DC fans will finally get to answer the question "Who Is Wonder Woman?" in the HC of the same name. Wonder Woman: Who Is Wonder Woman? HC reprints the first 5 issues of the new series by Allan Heinberg, Terry Dodson and Rachel Dodson.

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Cable Classic Vol. 1 TPB
Chronicles of Conan Vol. 14: Shadow of the Beast and Other Stories TPB
Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall SC
The Goon: Fancy Pants Vol. 2 HC *Ltd Signed*
Hawkgirl: Hath Set TPB

Ultimate Power HC
Wonder Woman: Who Is Wonder Woman HC
X-Men vs. Apocalypse Vol. 1: The Twelve TPB

THE WEEK IN ART BOOK RELEASES: LADRONN

Posted at 2:00 PM by gormuu

One of my favorite modern comic book artists gets his due in Unhuman Elephantmen: The Art of Ladronn HC, an art book which pulls together unpublished art, sketches and drawings by the artist. The solicit offers that the book is printed in the same format as Hip Flash: Concrete Jungle HC.

On the DC Archive front, one book moves up while another is pushed back: Doom Patrol Archives Vol. 4 moves up two weeks to hit stores February 13, while Adam Strange Vol. 3 is pushed back from 3/26 to 4/30, a delay of over a month.

SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER FEBRUARY 6

Posted at 11:30 AM by gormuu

Essential Avengers Vol. 6
Reprints Avengers #120-140, Giant-Size Avengers #1-4, Captain Marvel #33 and Fantastic Four #150
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping today from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, February 6.

The secrets of Mantis are revealed in Essential Avengers Vol. 6, which collects her saga and a bunch of other stories from Avengers #120-140, Giant-Size Avengers #1-4 and various crossover issues. This is smack dab in the middle of Steve Englehart's run on the title. More classic material from Marvel comes in the form of Thor Visionaries: Walter Simonson Vol. 5 TPB, the fifth and final book in the series. It pulls together Thor #375-382.

From DC comes what looks like the quirkiest trade in quite a long time, when the Wonder Woman title revamped itself in the mod late '60s. Diana Prince: Wonder Woman Vol. 1 TPB collects Wonder Woman #178-184 and Lois Lane #93, which features the powerless Diana Prince in a more spy/adventure style comic. Sounds like fun!

Superman reprints in color trade roll on with Superman Chronicles Vol. 4 TPB, culling more classics from the Archives. This volume pulls together Supes stories from Action Comics #26-31 and Superman #6-7.

Finally, Devil's Due issues an Omnibus HC for GI Joe vs. Transformers which promises to collect all four mini-series.

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Batman: False Faces HC
Diana Prince: Wonder Woman Vol. 1 TPB
Essential Avengers Vol. 6 TPB
Fallen Angel Vol. 4: Heroine Addiction TPB
GI Joe vs. Transformers Omnibus HC

SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER JANUARY 30
Posted at 11:30 PM by gormuu

Silver Surfer Masterworks Vol. 1 HC
Back To Press Edition
Reprints Silver Surfer #1-6
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, January 30.

Sadly, this week will not see the release of Uncanny X-Men Masterworks Vol. 6, the reasons for which were noted in a previous news update. We'll see that book in a couple more weeks, but there is a Masterworks to speak of this week and that is the back to press edition of the OOP Silver Surfer Masterworks Vol. 1 HC. It will feature newly restored and recolored files that were previously printed in the Silver Surfer Omnibus HC.

The march of the Marvel hardcovers continues with three more titles, led by Young Avengers HC, which reprints the entire run by the exciting new comic by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung. This series, which was previously available in two MPE HCs that quickly sold out, is finally available in oversized hardcover format. In addition to Young Avengers #1-12, it also includes the Young Avengers Special #1.

New Avengers Illuminati MPE HC will be out next week, and it is pretty much required reading for anyone who wants to be ready for the Skrull Invasion storyline currently underway. It reprints the entire five-issue limited series by Brian Michael Bendis and Jim Cheung. Along with Young Avengers HC, these two books are a solid block of Jim Cheung art!

Finally, X-Men: Endangered Species HC is a 136-page oversized HC that collects the Endangered Species one-shot and all 17 backup strip chapters culled from the X-Men family of titles. It acts as a lead-in of sorts to the Messiah Complex event that has been underway in the X-Men world.

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Batman: The Man Who Laughs HC
El Diablo TPB
Manhunter Vol. 4: Unleashed TPB
MM Vol. 15: Silver Surfer HC *BTP*
Silver Surfer Masterworks Vol. 1 HC *BTP*
New Avengers: Illuminati MPE HC
New Avengers/Transformers TPB
Outsiders: Checkmate Checkout TPB
Predator Omnibus Vol. 2 TPB
Uncanny X-Men: Rise & Fall of the Shi'ar Empire TPB
X-Men: Endangered Species HC
Young Avengers HC

UNCANNY X-MEN MASTERWORKS VOL. 6 DELAY: AN EXPLANATION

Posted at 5:00 PM by gormuu

From Marvel Masterworks editor Cory Sedlmeier about our late Mutant Masterworks volume:

"Uncanny X-Men Vol. 6 is going to be a few weeks late. Chris had issues that came up that prevented him from fulfilling his desire to write the intro, and that, coupled with holiday printer schedules, resulted in the book bumping. However, Terry Austin saved the day with an excellent introduction that will be coming your way soon, though a bit later than expected. With the decision put before us we decided a book that was a few weeks later than anticipated was better than a book without an introduction forever. All in all, I'm sure you'll find it was worth the wait."

Just a few more days to read Days of Future Past!

SGT. FURY VOL. 2 MASTERWORKS CONFIRMATION
Posted at 9:50 PM by gormuu

Things have been quite around the Current News page the last couple weeks, so beg your pardon on that. I've had a lot going on lately with non-comics stuff but I'm going to climb back in the saddle here to deliver release dates and information. And one bit of information I can confirm is the leak on the Timely-Atlas-Comic list that a Sgt. Fury Vol. 2 Masterworks volume is on the way. Yes...it is! Dick Ayers is indeed writing an introduction for the next volume of WWII era Howler action. This book's exact location on the Masterworks release schedule has yet to be determined, but I'll report when it is known!

SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER THE WEEK OF JANUARY 23

Posted at 9:50 PM by gormuu

Golden Age Daring Mystery Masterworks Vol. 1 HC
Reprints Daring Mystery Comics #1-4
Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping this week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, January 23.

It's a nifty slate of books shipping tomorrow, with something for everyone. Golden Age Daring Mystery Masterworks Vol. 1 HC hits stores, a book many thought we'd never dare see, let alone dare ask for! But there seems to be an adventurous streak in Masterworks-land these days, as this tie-in to The Twelve proves. Expect every single one of the characters in this volume to be unfamiliar (unless you're reading the new JMS/Chris Weston series), but in my mind that's what makes this volume of ultra-obscure Timely heroes so compelling.

Also from Marvel, Hulk Visionaries: Peter David Vol. 5 TPB continues reprinting more of the classic ten-year run of Peter David on Hulk. This one collects Incredible Hulk #354-372 and Annual #16 with lots of Jeff Purves and Dale Keown art. And for a modern take on some classic characters, check out the cosmic sequel Annihilation Conquest Vol. 1 HC, which collects Annihilation Conquest Prologue and Annihilation Saga, plus the AQ limited series Quasar #1-4 and Star-Lord #1-4, which are new takes on the old cosmic characters. The first series of HCs for the Annihilation series sold out quickly, so keep an eye on these.

On the strip front, the second volume of Milton Caniff Terry & the Pirates strips sees the light of day from IDW. The Complete Terry & the Pirates Vol. 2 HC continues the chronological accounting of the classic strip.

Among DC's cool offerings are Showcase Presents Aquaman Vol. 2 TPB which collects Aquaman stories from Aquaman #7-23, World's Finest #130-133, 135, 137 and 139 and Brave and the Bold #51; and Tales of the New Gods TPB which pulls together a bunch of stories by John Byrne, Walter Simonson, Jeph Loeb, Mark Evanier, Steve Rude, Frank Miller and more, all from Jack Kirby's Fourth Word and Orion, plus a "never-before-published short story by Mark Millar and Steve Ditko!" That sounds worth the price all by itself!

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Annihilation Conquest Book 1 HC
Ascend Special Edition HC
Complete Terry & the Pirates Vol. 2 HC
Fantastic Four: The End TPB
Hulk Visionaries: Peter David Vol. 5 TPB

SHIPPING FROM TALES OF WONDER THE WEEK OF JANUARY 16

Posted at 9:50 PM by gormuu

Here's the list of books you might be interested in that were shipped from Tales of Wonder, on the week of Wednesday, January 16.

More of Jeff Smith's Bone in color HC and TPB came out last week, with Bone Vol. 7: Ghost Circles continuing the chronological countdown of the series. And after a several weeks delay, EC Archives: Crime SuspenStories Vol. 1 HC saw release, recounting the first six issues of the EC classic series.

DC had a nice mix of interesting books, including a HC reprint of Harley Quinn stories in Harley Quinn: Preludes and Knock Knock Jokes HC, which collects Harley Quinn #1-7 by Karl Kesel and art by Terry Dodson. Another was a Vertigo reprint of the Grant Morrison era Doom Patrol in Doom Patrol Vol. 6: Planet Love TPB, which collects Doom Patrol #58-36 and Doom Force Special #1, the last of the Morrison period. DC Action figure fans probably already know about the DC Action Figure Archive HC by Scott Beatty, which has pictures of every known DC action figure to exist with all kinds of info and arcana to go with it.

Marvel issued two Essentials, one a new printing of an old volume, and the other an entirely new volume! Essential Captain America Vol. 1 comes back to print and collects Cap from Tales of Suspense #59-99 and Captain America #100-102, and Essential Marvel Saga Vol. 1 collects one of my favorite series from the '80s, the historical recounting of the Marvel Universe (as it was understood circa 1984-85) by Peter Sanderson. It reprints Marvel Saga #1-12 and makes for a nice history lesson of the continuity that was established back then.

Following up last year's Avengers Disassembled HC, House of M HC finally debuted in oversized hardcover format. The Brian Michael Bendis/Olivier Coipel event is collected in its entirety, as this OHC reprints House of M #1-8, The Pulse Special Edition and Secrets of the House of M handbook.

Two more Marvel HCs on the release list are Marvel Premiere Edition HCs. First, Vol. 8 in the MPE Classic line, Hulk: The End MPE Classic HC reprints two giant-sized tales written by Peter David: Incredible Hulk: The End, with art by Dale Keown, and Future Imperfect #1-2 with art by George Perez. Another rare modern classic by Peter David is reprinted in X-Factor: Madrox - Multiple Choice MPE HC, which collects the hard-to-find Madrox #1-5, the cult limited series with art by Pablo Raimondi that kick-started the new direction for X-Factor as a noirish detective series.

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Bone Vol. 7: Ghost Circles Color Ed. HC
Bone Vol. 7: Ghost Circles Color Ed. TPB

A friend of mine sent me an email this morning that said, "Dude, your message board looks like it just got hijacked by a pack of wild Japanese teenage girls!" Such is life with our new-fangled message board format called Yuku. Ezboard is a thing of the past and Yuku is what is hip, happening and now. Which means that longtime message boarders like Highland Ray are on the warpath!

Well, drop on in and check out the changes. I'm still getting used to them myself, but I'm intrigued that, in the end, it'll be an overall improvement. Please email me if you have any issues or concerns you'd like addressed and I'll do my best to reply and see if I can help out. There are a few threads where we are all pitching in to help each other in the transition, so maybe they will help you get your bearings.

SHIPPING NEXT WEEK FROM TALES OF WONDER
Posted at 10:00 AM by gormuu

Here's the list of books you might be interested in that begin shipping next week from Tales of Wonder, on Wednesday, January 9.

The second week of January '08 is the week for black and white reprints, as Marvel and DC offer up new volumes in their popular, B&W phone book lines while Dark Horse introduces a coveted '70s-era black and white mag into their new Omnibus format. Marvel offers up Essential Captain America Vol. 4, which collects Captain America and the Falcon #157-186, a run which features tons of timeless Steve Engelhart tales (Secret Empire and Nomad, f'r instance). DC counters with Showcase Presents Robin, the Boy Wonder Vol. 1, which delivers solo stories starring Batman's sidekick from over the years. And Dark Horse finally dusts off what many feel to be the definitive B&W magazine of the '70s, Savage Sword of Conan, in what they describe as a "massive trade paperback". Clocking in at 500+ pages, that sounds massive to me! The paper stock is reported to be in line with their manga offerings, but we'll be looking for initial reports on this book come Wednesday for full details.

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

Beyond! TPB
BPRD: Garden of Souls TPB
Conan: The Blood Stained Crown and Other Stories TPB
Essential Captain America Vol. 4 TPB
Ghost Rider Vol. 3: Apocalypse Soon TPB
Grifter and Midnighter TPB
JSA Presents Vol. 2: Stars and Stripes TPB
New Warriors Vol. 1: The Next Right Thing TPB
Nextwave, Agents of HATE Vol. 2: I Kick Your Face TPB

SHIPPING THIS WEEK FROM TALES OF WONDER
Posted at 10:30 AM by gormuu

Here's the list of books you might be interested in that began shipping yesterday from Tales of Wonder, on Friday, December 4. *PLEASE NOTE: New books shipped on Friday this week due to the New Year's Day holiday.*

Counter to the heavy volume of the previous week, the first week of 2008's offerings showcase a lull in the collected editions schedule, with few high-profile releases. One of the bigger releases for classic comics fans is Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom Archives Vol. 4 HC, an oft-delayed book that has finally seen release. Reprinting Doctor Solar #23-32 and the guest appearance in The Occult Files of Dr. Spektor #14, this brings the Doctor Solar Archives line from Dark Horse to a close.

From Vertigo, the highly acclaimed Pride of Baghdad SC by Brian K. Vaughan and Niko Henrichon is released to follow up the successful hardcover.

And from Marvel, after successful - and separate - lines of Essentials featuring Danny Rand and Luke Cage, we finally see the first issues that unite them in their historic comics partnership. Essential Power Man & Iron Fist Vol. 1 TPB collects PM/IF #50-72 and #74-75. (PM/IF #73 had a guest appearance by the licensed character ROM and is not included.) And in a full-color, classic trade paperback, John Byrne's '80s-era run of Avengers West Coast is further recounted in the timely Avengers West Coast: Darker Than Scarlet TPB, which collects AWC #51-57 and #60-62.

Finally, a book that saw many delays, both as a monthly comic and as a collected edition, Moon Knight Vol. 2: Midnight Sun MPE HC sees release in Marvel Premiere Edition format. It collects the last of the Charlie Huston/David Finch run from Moon Knight #7-13.

Here's the list of highlights from TOW's list of books:

30 Days of Night: Red Snow TPB
Avengers West Coast: Darker Than Scarlet TPB
Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom Vol. 4 HC
Essential Power Man and Iron Fist Vol. 1 TPB
JLA: Kid Amazo TPB
Marvel Adventures Spider-Man Vol. 8: Forces of Nature Digest
Moon Knight Vol. 2: Midnight Sun MPE HC
Ms. Marvel Vol. 3: Operation Lightning Storm TPB
Powers Vol. 11: Secret Identity TPB
Pride of Baghdad SC
Shadowpact Vol. 2: Cursed TPB
Storm TPB
Superman: Redemption TPB
X-Men: Phoenix Warsong TPB
