From the Mouths of the Marvels:

“With the most fertile minds in all of the entertainment world we create, on a daily basis, the myths and legends of tomorrow. This book you hold in your hands barely scratches the surface....but it's a good place to start!"

-- Joe Quesada, from the introduction

From the Inside Dustflap:

The Marvel Encyclopedia contains the essential facts about Marvel's most famous characters- their origins, their powers, their most trusted allies and their most dangerous enemies.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR: They rocketed into space in an experimental starship, the first humans to attempt interstellar travel. But a freak encounter with cosmic rays changed their lives forever, granting each unique powers. Now, they continue to challenge the unknown as the greatest team of superhuman adventurers ever assembled.

SPIDER-MAN: The bite of an irradiated spider granted high-school student Peter Parker incredible, arachnid-like powers. When a burglar killed his beloved Uncle Ben, a grief-stricken Peter vowed to use his amazing abilities to protect his fellow man. He had learned an invaluable lesson: With great power, there must also come great responsibility.

THE HULK: Caught in the heart of a nuclear explosion, victim of gamma radiation gone wild, Dr. Robert Bruce Banner now finds himself transformed during times of stress into the dark personification of his repressed rage and fury. Driven by hate, the Hulk is the most powerful man-like creature to walk the Earth.

DAREDEVIL: He dwells in a world of eternal night, but the blackness is filled with sounds and scents, tastes and textures most men cannot perceive. Although attorney Matt Murdock is blind, his other four senses function with superhuman sharpness. Daredevil stalks the streets of Hell's Kitchen at night, a relentless avenger of justice.

THE X-MEN: Change is coming. The future of evolution has emerged. They are mutants, Homo Superior, individuals gifted with strange and fantastic powers simply by virtue of their genetic makeup. Many of these mutants believe they should rule, and that open conflict with the human majority is inevitable. Hated and feared by those they've sworn to protect, another group stands in defense of a world on the brink of genetic war.

Plus, get the latest scoop on Marvel's newest characters:

THE ULTIMATES: These government-sponsored operatives- including Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor- oppose the rising threats to humanity no single super-being could withstand. Along with the Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Spider-Man, the Ultimates are truly heroes for the 21st Century.

Torn from the pages of today's headlines, THE CALL features New York's finest police officers, firefighters and EMS rescue workers in reality-based adventures. Learn the story behind these brave men and women who selflessly put their lives on line every day.

Enhancing each character's entry is full-color artwork by the very best illustrators working in comics today- renowned names like John Romita, Jr., Joe Quesada, Frank Quitely and Alex Ross. Never before has one volume ever assembled such an awesome array of Marvel Comics artwork.

Marvel Encyclopedia Vol. 1 is broken down into several sections, covering the thematic sections of the Marvel Universe like Spider-Man, Avengers, Fantastic Four, etc. Within each section, the major characters and supporting characters are ordered alphabetically, with their corresponding villains following, also in alphabetical order. Each section carries a brief two-page introduction. Each character with an entry is granted either four, two or one pages that gives a basic history of the character; biographical information such as secret identity, first appearance, height, weight, eye color and hair color; a breakdown on powers and weapons used by the character; and a power ratings grid that measures their intelligence, strength, speed, durability, energy projection and fighting skills. There is also a box that directs readers to essential collections that feature the character's most significant moments. Interspersed with the text material are heavy doses of previously released artwork from today's hottest Marvel artists.
